 The Ladies’ Grand Excuse Me

There was a time not long ago

When formal dances raged unchecked

And ladies draped in flowing frocks

Like hawks pursued their dance cards

The games that men and women play

So varied in their plots and schemes

Paled by that, most wicked, rouse

The Ladies’ Grand Excuse Me

It is not known who hatched this code

Or why the gentry seized it

But here it is and here it stays

A mantrap, none more deadly

So there they prance, the hapless beaus

Their sweethearts’ arms around them

And all seems well until the cry,

‘The Ladies’ Grand Excuse Me’

The prey in sight, the target locked

Beware, young damsels, heed me!

A single touch and all is lost

For nought can block the shot

The vanquished melt into the crowd

Defeat a bitter blow

Yet there are others, and you are free…
